Improving Idaho’s criminal justice system— one project at a time.

Launched in 2021, we are a nonpartisan nonprofit working to improve the criminal justice system in Idaho.

Our mission is to reduce the size of the criminal justice system in Idaho and reinvest resources into community-based treatment that will prevent crime in the first place and allow individuals and communities to thrive.

Idaho has the highest rate of incarceration for women in the nation. When both men and women populations are counted, Idaho ranks 4th overall as having the highest rate of incarceration in the country.

The number of people in prison has gone up more than 500% since the 1980s. As a result, 1 out of 8 children in Idaho have lost a parent at some point to incarceration. According to one state statistical center, in 2017, 1 out of every 25 adult Idahoans was under correctional control (meaning in prison, jail, or on probation or parole) even though Idaho ranked in the bottom three western states in terms of violent crime and had the lowest rate of property crime.

Idaho’s criminal justice system impacts the lives of thousands of men, women, and children each year. Together, we can make changes that will use our tax dollars more wisely, limit the role of government, and protect our liberty, all while making Idaho safer.

Idaho Justice Project aims to help formerly incarcerated people and those directly impacted by the system find a voice in the process of improving it.

We are building a coalition of system-impacted persons, community members, lawmakers, system stakeholders, agency leaders, nonprofits, and businesses in a movement for change.

Together, we can:

  1. Reduce the number of people in prison, on probation, and parole.

  2. Reinvest resources to community-based services that treat mental health and substance use disorder.

  3. Restore individuals and families impacted by the justice system through evidence-based treatment and programming in prison and jails to empower individuals to succeed upon release.
